Preserving Traditions, Celebrating Heritage
The Bulgarian Heritage Society (BHS) is a public not-for-profit organization founded in 2024 by a group of passionate Bulgarian-American immigrants. Registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, BHS is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Bulgarian history, traditions, culture, language, and heritage within the Bulgarian-American community across the United States.
Our work began in 2021 with a critical mission: rescuing the historic Saint Ivan Rilski Church in Chicago from bankruptcy. Over the past four years, we have expanded our efforts to include educational programs, cultural events, and community support initiatives. We believe that preserving our heritage strengthens our identity and fosters unity among Bulgarian-Americans, ensuring that future generations can connect with their roots.
Our Mission
To protect, support, and celebrate Bulgarian history, traditions, culture, language, and heritage among the Bulgarian-American community. Through collaborative initiatives, education, and advocacy, we empower individuals and families to maintain a vibrant connection to their Bulgarian roots.
Our Vision
A thriving, interconnected Bulgarian-American community where every generation proudly embraces and shares Bulgaria's rich cultural legacy, creating lasting bonds that transcend borders and inspire global appreciation for Bulgarian heritage.

Saving Saint Ivan Rilski Church
In 2021, the historic Saint Ivan Rilski Church in Chicago -- a cornerstone of Bulgarian-American spiritual and cultural life since 1996 -- faced imminent closure due to bankruptcy and outstanding loans.
BHS mobilized the community through fundraising campaigns, partnerships with local Bulgarian organizations, and volunteer efforts. By 2025, we had successfully purchased all outstanding loans, cleared the debt, and restored the church to full community ownership. Today, it hosts weekly services and prepares for its grand re-opening.
